The Read More option in 1.5 RC3

In my previous post I mentioned the fact that the Read More option of Joomla was not editable anymore.
Before that I wrote about how-to-solve-the-joomla-read-more-problem in version 1.0.x

But I found an item in RC3 in the Advanced Parameters of the article section that makes in possible to do an “Click here to read” text per article..

It is all the way done and marked as “Alternative Read More text:”

The Joomla read more option per article

If you put you own text in there you can have something like:

The result of your own Read More text per article

If you use this option, you will loose the replacement of article title that since RC3 is attached to the Read More.. yes I missed that great new SEO Feature at first glance :-(

Joomla Article titel attached to Read More function

These two combinations are a great asset for Search Engine Optimization and for the visitors of your Joomla 1.5 RC3 based website…

For a production site, I still want to wait for the Stable Release, lets wait and see what else for great little improvements the Joomla Developers have in store for us!
I must admit that the more I find in RC3 the more excited I get about this new 1.5 release.

The option Joomla 1.5 gives to change the readmore link for each article didn’t work for me. I don’t like to use the words Read more… therefore I changed it to something that made sense on my website.

Here is how I changed the Read more… in Joomla 1.5

I went to the directory in which my Joomla site was installed. I have it installed locally at

    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15

    I then did a control-F
I did a search in the joomla_15 folder and searched by “A word or phrase in the file:”

    My search word was

Make sure that case sensitive is checked and then click search.

    The search found 9 files.

    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15languageen-GBen-GB.ini
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15languageen-GBen-GB.mod_newsflash.ini
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15administratorhelpen-GBjoomla.whatsnew15.html
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15administratorlanguageen-GBen-GB.com_config.ini
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15administratorlanguageen-GBen-GB.com_content.ini
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15administratorlanguageen-GBen-GB.com_frontpage.ini
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15administratorlanguageen-GBen-GB.com_menus.ini
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15administratorlanguageen-GBen-GB.ini
    D:xampphtdocsjoomla_15pluginseditorsxstandardpreview.xsl

I then opened each of these files with notepad.
I did a control-H and input Read me… for the find what field and Click here to read more… for the replace with field.
Check match case and then click replace all for each of the files.

    I hope this helps.

Hi, I’m new to Joomla. I have quite a number of articles on my site and the “read more” function has been working well up untill now. After posting my latest article, and checking it on the site, the “read more” function took me to my previously posted article instead of continuing with the current one. I’ve tried a number of things including trashing the previous article. When I do this, the “read more” takes me to a 404 message.

Can you suggest what I might do to fix the problem?

    Thanks

    Bob

@Bob: Please check if you have a cache funtion working in your Joomla site, or a component like sh404SEF. if you do, please clear the cache and check the URL component to see if the text or url is duplicate.

I recently installed Joomla 1.5 on one of my domains and so far I had no problems, except learning hot to operate its admin panel – so unlike wordpress or any other cms I came across before, but I am slowly getting along with it! :)
