Does Click Distance have an Impact on Your Google Ranking ?

Filed Under: Joomla Seo, Search Engines

Everybody wants to be on the Number One spot in Google.

But their search engine ranking system stays secret, so your are never going to know what to do exactly to rank your position in the Top Ten of Google.

But help is on its way, that is why my Blog and website are here…
I will tell you in several posts how to optimize a Joomla website for Search Engine Top Rankings.

First off:

– Check you website structure, can anybody who comes onto your website follow the navigation map easily?
– Make sure that your customers can find the information in about 3 Clicks.

This Golden SEO Tip of 3 Clicks works!

Some people know that it works, some have even gone so far as to check the Google results and Track Back on the ones that are known in the Ranking.

As said, you have to try to get your page information within that 3 Click Distance.

In Joomla you can easily do this with the Joomla sh404SEF component.

Its easy to install and work wonders on Search Engine Friendly URL's.

Select the Configuration and go to the SEF Option and look for Extensions -> Joomla and set the Last one only on the Show Category option.

This works best if you have category's with your keywords in them.

Here is an example of that option in real life.

Example Last Category Only

As you can see, the link only contains the domain name, the category that is the container for your article and the article link itself.

If a visitor lands on your website, make sure your navigation allows them to get the the information you want to provide them in just three clicks.

To do that create a simple menu where you only show the categories and choose to show the articles either as blog post or as a list of articles.

Joomla Menu Manager and Blog Layout Selection

In you dashboard you go to Menu select the Menu of your choice or create a new one. Now choose New menu item en give it a title.

Joomla New Menu Item

On the Menu Item Type select option make your choice on the layout option you want to use.

It depends on what kind of website you want top build, but since most people are more into a visual experience I choose for Category Blog.

With that layout I can create an intro post with an image and set a multi-column layout with Intro images as well.

Joomla Blog Layout choice

So on the menu tab Blog Layout I set a Leading articles of 1, Intro articles as 4 or 6 in 2 Columns and finish with 5 links. But hé that is just me… see what works best for you. Below a example of who that would show in the content pane.

Now if a visitor lands on your site (Click 1) , he will see your menu Item and goes to that option (Click 2) Selects the Article or Link he or she wants to read (Click 3).

On main thing to remember is that you need to have a good site category structure in place so you can setup these menu items as easy as possible and without overloading your menu's with a lot of subcategories or sub menu items.

If you follow the 3 Click rule your visitors will love the easy navigation of your website and Google will love you because they don't need to crawl into unknown depth of your site to find the information you want them to show.
